Who a robot vacuum suits
A robot vacuum suits a household that would rather not vacuum every day: a home with pets, children, or a long stretch of hard floor. It is a big gift for a partner or a family, a good one for siblings to give their parents together, and it fits Christmas or a housewarming.
The point of owning one is that it works on its own schedule, so it suits someone who is busy more than someone who enjoys housework.
What to look for in a robot vacuum
- Floors. Check whether it suits hard floors, carpet or both. Models that also mop are meant for hard floors.
- Mopping. A vacuum-and-mop model cleans both in one run. A vacuum-only model is simpler.
- The dock. Some empty their own dustbin into a dock, which means emptying it less often. A dock needs wall space and a power point.
- Mapping. Models that map the home can be told to clean one room, or to avoid another.
- Pets. If there are pets, look for a brush that resists tangles and a strong suction setting.
- App and wi-fi. Most are controlled by an app, which needs a wi-fi connection at home.
- Noise and height. A tall robot may not fit under a sofa or bed.
When a robot vacuum is the wrong gift
In a home with stairs throughout, many cables on the floor, or very little free floor, a robot vacuum struggles. Someone who loves choosing appliances may prefer to pick their own model. And since it is a large gift, it is worth asking first, or giving it as a joint present with others.
