Who an insulated tumbler suits
An insulated tumbler suits someone who carries a drink with them everywhere: coffee on the commute, water at the desk, tea on the sideline at Saturday sport. It's for the person whose coffee goes cold while they answer one more email, and for the person who means to drink more water and keeps forgetting.
It is a safe choice for a colleague or a Secret Santa, because almost everyone drinks something. It's useful in a car, a gym bag or on a desk, and it comes in colours that can match their taste.
What to look for in an insulated tumbler
- Size. Smaller tumblers, around 350 to 600 mL, suit a daily coffee. The large 40 oz tumblers hold about 1.2 litres, which suits someone who wants water all day. Match the size to what they actually drink.
- Insulation. Stainless steel with double-wall vacuum insulation keeps cold drinks cold for many hours and hot drinks hot for several. Cold usually lasts longer than hot. Some makers state the times on the listing.
- The lid. A slider or closed lid keeps heat in and suits coffee. A straw lid suits cold drinks, and lets heat escape faster. Leak-resistant is not the same as leak-proof, so a tumbler laid on its side in a bag is a gamble.
- Cup holders. Many fit a car cup holder, especially the smaller sizes. If they drive, check the car.
- Care. Some are dishwasher safe and some are hand-wash only, so check the listing.
When an insulated tumbler is the wrong gift
If they already have a tumbler they love, another one is just a second tumbler. If it needs to ride in a bag, look at the maker's wording: leak-resistant is a promise about drips, not a guarantee. If their car has one small cup holder, measure first. And if they prefer their coffee out of a proper ceramic mug, that's an opinion worth respecting.
